Tea Time

For some reason, last night the boys decided we were going to be coming into office at 9Am (usually we come in at 10, leave at 7 or after that). I think a motivator was the 9AM office tea we manage to miss everyday (we all love the tea, and the tea boy!) but whatever our individual motivations might have been, we were all up at 7:30 AM (unheard of, normally) and I actually got to say "have a good day" to Anna before she left for work (she leaves really early, usually we're still sleeping). Within minutes, Sohaib and I were slaving away making breakfast for everyone (omelette's) and by 8:30, all dressed up, we were ready to leave. So far, on track for tea - yay!

So we get downstairs, head for Taha's car, and realize - oh no! - there's a punctured tire! Not letting this faze us one bit, Taha, KLepo and I start puttering around trying to get the spare on, and Sohaib, his usual useless self :P is standing in a corner, smoking. What follows is undoubtedly the funniest half hour I've ever experienced this early in the morning, unfortunately, I only started taking pictures halfway through, and my camera phone ain't great, but regardless, there's some proof of the hilarity.

Anyway, I was talking about how the car tire was being changed. So just as Taha had managed to raise the car with the jack, bang!, the car fell off it. Like literally, just slid off the jack! At first I thought Klepo (who was at the back) had accidentally pushed it, but looking over I realized he was no where near it! Taha's expression was priceless, KLepo was swearing in Slavak, and Sohaib and I couldn't stop laughing. Anyway, we live above Gunsmoke, and even at this godless hour, they had people there, so they came over (to watch, I might add). So did two beggars who were roaming in the street. Pretty soon we had a good crowd going, Sohaib still smoking and smiling, KLepo giving suggestions, Taha trying to clean his pants of all the dust (he was all dressed up for a meeting) me taking pictures, and the car just standing there, half tilted into the sandy parking lot, with one tire missing!

Finally, Klepo came up with, what was, a brilliant suggestion. Let's put rocks right behind the wheel (Where the jack is supposed to go) so we can first lift the car and then put the actual jack in (since there was no space to put it in). So he starts collecting rocks, Taha starts digging a hole (I still don't know why!) and the rest of us are still standing there, smoking, watching, taking pictures.

Then comes the difficult part, raising the car that one extra inch or two, so Taha can get the jack in. Finally, Sohaib decides to help, so Klepo and him start lifting the car, but don't get very far, since it's heavy, and well..they're no supermen! So Taha, who's still kneeling on the hot ground in his formals, yells at the beggars/Gunsmoke guys, "Dude, help us!!" and they all run over. Suddenly, there's too many people near the car, I'm expecting another fall, one of the guys is trying to put the jack way under the car (near the axle, by my guess) and Taha's like, "not there!".

What seems like an hour later (ok, no, 10 minutes!) the car is up on the jack, and miraculously, the rest of the tire changing procedure was completed within minutes by the onlookers, with Taha providing a little help. Sohaib, is standing around looking like he did a lot, Klepo is still smiling and Taha's like, "shit, my clothes are messed up now!" and I'm like "let's go!"

We leave, make a few stops at some petrol stations to get the punctured tire fixed, get to office at 9:20ish, thinking, "crap, we missed the tea!". Taha comes in, makes a call to the office kitchen, requests we still be given tea, and lo and behold, at 10:20ish, the tea makes its way to our office! Good morning, eh?

Karachi

When my brother was moving to Karachi (a good 6 odd years ago) my parents were all - OMG! That city is SO not safe. Which was not really true - with a population of over 18 million (yes, 18 million!) it's a big city - so admittedly, things happen, and there's crime and what-not. Anyway, my brother did move here, and he lived a very peaceful (for Karachi standards) life till he just moved to Istanbul.

Now I'm here :/

I like the city - don't get me wrong. But I can't ever imagine living in this city long term. Admittedly, it has a beach (and access to lots more nearby), you can go crabbing (yum!) and zamzama is, well, zamzama :D It's a fun, crazy, noisy, alive place to be - all of one year - then you're like, seriously dude, I gotta get out! I'm more of a I-need-a-quiet-place-to-think kinda person, so this constant hum of traffic, generators (during power cuts) and people is a little annoying.

...3 months left :)

Sonnet XVII

I first posted this a couple years ago. I was sent this again a few days ago, and it's still as beautiful as ever :)

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Race over

Yesterday, after Sohaib's constant "Dude, we have to go watch Race!", and Taha's "OMG, it's the best movie, EVER!" the Mansion/Clubhouse set decided to set off to Prince Cinema to watch it (Cineplex costs 250, Prince is only 150). Along the way, we managed to get some of the local color - Saaim, Ahmed, Junaid - thanks guys :)
*Spoilers Ahead*

Anyway, lemme start off by saying that if you like Indian movies, you'll probably like this one. It's "alright"...not great...not incredibly horrible. What saves the movie from being horrible is Saif Ali Khan (and for the guys, the hot chicks). At one point, when I thought he'd died, I was all set to walk out of the cinema (then realized that I wasn't in DHA, and had no way to get home!) so decided to stick around, thankfully, since Saif was brought back from the dead (yes, that's true, the DEAD!) towards the end.

Another good thing is a couple of songs (not the touch-me one, but the race one!), some of which are very jive-worthy I might add! Junaid was actually noting down steps :P

Finally, the cars! Oh the cars :)

What makes the movie irritating:
- Akshaye Khanna
- Katrina Kaif's acting (or lack there of)
- Anik Kapoor and his dumb jokes
- Sameera Reddy and her Jessica Simpson-esque role
- The jokes (they deserve their own line!)
& the one million and one twists (my brain grew numb at one point!)

If you must watch it, then go to a cheap cinema (I think I'd have killed Taha had I payed for Cineplex tickets.), and make sure you hoot along (I was the only person hooting every time Saif was on-screen :D) as that just adds to the fun :D

I'm putting up the movie poster as eye-candy - ah, Saif :)

Thatta...and more

As I've mentioned before, my house mates decided to spend Sunday in Thatta. Apparently it's a very cool place to go with lots to see, and since 90% of the people I live with are foreigners, that's a good enough reason to travel for two hours, in the heat, on a Sunday. I, however, wanted to relax, so I stayed back, and thus missed out on all the excitement (which, interestingly enough, was not related to the sights of Thatta at all)

Firstly, let me say that I'm really glad all the idiots made it back alive. This could've gone a lot worse. And my plea to everyone is to always wear a seatbelt! (unless you're in Taha's car, which doesn't have any!)

The story goes something like this (and I might be wrong, as this is was told to me mostly by people not in the car). These guys are coming back from Thatta in two cars (Lodhi's and Adeel Malik's) with Sohaib/Aun/Anna/Zafirah and Adeel in his car, and Andrew/KLepo/Michael and Lodhi in the other. Obviously, this being a road trip of sorts, there's a lot of talking/singing going on in the cars, when suddenly Adeel Malik realizes there's a truck in front of his car, that he's going to bang into. Oh no! Lots of brakes, screams (probably Sohaib's), oh fucks (Aun) and praying (Zafirah) must've followed before the car actually hit the truck. Thankfully, no one got seriously injured (because of the seatbelts!!) and Adeel walked away with just a few scratches (and a heavily damaged car!) Regardless, he proceeded to come over to the Mansion for sheesha after, and the trooper that he is, will be joining us for Race tonight!

In the aftermath of this accident, Sohaib has taken to squealing every time Taha drives to fast (And those of you who've seen Taha's car must know that too fast in that isn't really that fast at all)

the perfect sunday

So many people have heard about my "perfect Sunday" but I just felt like I had to put this down somewhere, as history :)

Some background: my Sunday's usually suck! I get up, people are everywhere (I live with 9 people) and there is general chaos and no direction. Usually we try and do something big (like go sightseeing, big dinner) and I end up feeling like i got no time to relax over the weekend.

Yesterday, my aforementioned housemates had all gone to Thatta for a day trip, so when I woke up at 2 PM(yes, 2!) there was no one around, so I had a nice breakfast, listened to music REALLY loudly and started my laundry.

After about an hour, some friends dropped by, so I talked to them, but they left in about an hour so then I went to Sunday market (oh, the lovely-ness!) and just walked around there for quite a bit, bought some stuff.

Came back, had lunch/dinner, and then just read magazines and books till my housemates got back. Then we had sheesha, talked on the roof for a bit, and I came back downstairs, listened to music till I fell asleep.

Icing on the cake was a call from NY - Tori/Kirmani who were spending a Sunday together decided to call and congratulate Sohaib on my cell, but that only meant I got to talk to both of them, which was great!

Blips on the perfect Sunday:
- Adeel Malik and the rest of the troupe making noise at 9 AM in the kitchen (bitches!) and waking me up (I ignored them and went back to sleep)
- The car crash, and the excitement it caused (more on that later)

..free your mind...

My last post was in Jan, and the one before that? I don't even remember...complete and utter sadness...

...I have so much to say, but no one to say it to...
...So much has happened, but I can't wrap my head around it...
...A new chapter of my life starts in another 3 months, and all I can think of is how much I'll miss these people...

...so many people :)

And so it happened...

I just came out of an event I'd been waiting for for the last year, maybe a little more :) AIESEC Lahore's 2008/2009 LCP elections. Here's why:

In September 2005, we recruited some great kids into AIESEC. We recruited a couple of freshmen, and some of these went on to become EB members that December. One of them, Hasan, sat down with me at a national conference, and we planned what he was going to do in AIESEC for the next 4 years. We realized that in order to run for MCP, he'd need to stay fully involved in the LC till he graduated, thus making it logical that he apply for LCP at some stage. The best time to do this was his last year - 2008/2009.

Later that year, at a mid-year recruitment, we recruited another freshman (one of many), who, we quickly realized, was able to get along with anyone, and ended up becoming someone the EB would turn to when trying to work out LC problems. That was Adeel. Somewhere in the middle of 2006, he too realized he wanted to to apply for the EB, and then maybe later, LCP. in the 2008/2009 term :)

(This is turning into an Indian movie, sorry!)

Anyway - today was those elections. Two people we'd recruited, seen take on various positions, with various results were running against each other (plus Bubloo, but this story is not about him, sorry again!). They were both equally good, both had been trained equally well. The difference was their approach on what the LC needed to do next year, and how they were going to get it done.

People have asked me, who would you rather win. I can't choose, it's not a fair question. Since 2006, I'd known one of these guys would be LCP 2008/2009 - but over the years I had varied opinions on who would do a better job, depending on their recent successes and failures. For me, they were both ideal candidates, unfortunately, there's only one LCP :)

Anyway, I just came out of elections, and we have the answer - the LCP for AIESEC Lahore 2008/2009 is Adeel Hasan. I couldn't be happier, I couldn't be sadder. It's so odd.

Congrats Adeel - you're going to do a great job! And Hasan, MCP elections 2009/2010 are next year :)

What City Should I live in?

What City Should You Live In?

You should live in New York City. America's largest city will ensure that you will blend into the crowd. You are the brooding type--introspective, creative, and eccentric--and NYC's cutting-edge, individualistic culture and ambience will appeal to you.

Day 3...

KLepo and Taha are here - Yay! I'm not the only new/slighlt confused person in the apartment anymore!

We all went and picked KLepo up at the airport (his flight was 40 minutes early, but thankfully he was still in the terminal when we got there), then we came back to the apartment, hung out on the roof (which we might lose soon, courtesy DHA), went out for dinner to Karachi Broast (which is a pretty good local version of Nando's), and then proceeded to come back home and do some further hanging out on the roof - with some AIESEC dance lessons thrown in.

Now the new MC is blogging/checking emails/updating facebook while the old MC is passed out after a hard night of partying...but it's 4:30 am and tomorrow will involve spring cleaning the apartment, so I should log off and get some sleep.

Pictures soon...I just need to get them from all the people who own cameras :D

Day 1

Thought I'd update the blog now that I've finally moved into the MC Mansion. It's been a while since I did anything AIESEC related - took a one month break from everything but emails, and had a blast. Am now in Karachi - the city of lights, and more importantly AIESEC in Pakistan's HQ - and moved into the apartment last night. Very soon the entire place is going to be crawling with incoming and outgoing MCs, CEEDs and interns, so the next few weeks should definitely be interesting.

Sohaib's getting here on the 7th, KLepo get's here tomorrow, and Taha will be moving in soon too - so by next weekend we'll have the whole 07/08 team in the house - really psyched!

More updates after Klepo arrives.

VisualDNA

A worthy cause...

Arto, the guy who made the IC '06 video is making a movie, and he needs your support.

You can become a coproducer of my film 'Wszystko' (eng. 'Everything') and help me to make it as well. All you need to do is to support this film with a sum of at least 10 euros / 10 dollars / 5 pounds (higher amounts are very welcome). In exchange I will mention your name in the credits and moreover I will send you a DVD with the film to the adress given by you.

He's collected $2500 so far, so if you're up for it, log on to the film's website and donate!

Updates...

For all those wondering, I'm in Lahore right now, not Karachi/Islamabad/or another country. My cell phone is broken, so email me instead :D

Lotsa stuff's happened...and I didn't have the time to post (read: too lazy), so here's a quick update...

- IPM 07: An amazing conference to be a part of. Best thing about it: meeting all the crazy elects!!

- Post IPM: Had a great post-stay with Salman Suhail and his great roommates!! Thanks guys! Got to see the Pyramids, Sphinx...2 down, 5 to go :D

- NPM: Spent a relaxing week in Karachi, and participated in the best 2 day conference EVER! Here's to next year and the coolest NLT ever!!

Here's something that I've had opened for the last couple of days, but wasn't sure if I had the guts to put out there. My nohari window (an inversion of the johari window) can be accessed here. For those of you who haven't contributed to my johari window yet, that's over here.

That's all for right now...I think my first post in a few months should be short :D

We're in Egypt!

Yep, we reached here safe and sound - but it was an extremely interesting trip (when aren't they?). Our flight from Khi-Abu Dhabi was eventless, but we were delayed at that airport for 2 extra hours (on top of our 4 hour transit!) but we managed to meet the Sri Lankan delegation, and a guy from the UK - all AIESECer - so we managed to pass the time with considerable ease (although Costa did tell us to stop hogging the sofa after two hours!).

The fun actually started after we reached Cairo airport, because when we got off the plane and came towards immigration, there was a huge group of people screaming and shouting - which we later found out were people wuiting to be given their passports. Since the online passport scanning network in the airport had collapsed a few hours ago, everything was being done manually, which meant that after you had submitted your passport to the control booth, they would manually enter your data and then after about three hours they'd send a bunch of passports to these gaurds who were screaming out the names of the people who the passport belonged to! Lucky for us, since we were delayed by two hours, we missed most of this commotion, and only saw the ending, as after about 10 minutes of being in line to hand over our passport, we were told that the system had been restored and we could do the whole thing digitally - meaning we got done in 15 minutes!!

Have just reached the pre-meeting venue after a very harrowing drive through Cairo streets, but that's normal supposedly, and are now getting some stuff done and re-charging before heading out for dinner.
